SURF DOGS

HOT DIGGITY DOGS!

I seem to be spending more and more time in the south side these days, and that’s no accident! The plethora of food places over there is unbelievable, some established and some new, and I’m finally working my way through them. Recently I’ve been on a bit of a brunch kick so thought it was only right I tried some dinner options as well. Enter Surf Dogs and their gourmet dogs.

This is also the latest instalment of my cheap eats series. The deal for Surf Dogs came courtesy of Itison (latest deals) and was £9 for a hot dog and fries for 2, pretty good value if you ask me! Unlike some deals the times for this one were great too, we were able to book a table for 5pm on a Saturday which was a nice change of pace.

There was no exclusions either which was good, with the weekly special included for a 50p supplement. With drinks and a few extras we paid another £5.90 on the night so great value all round. There’s also a great selection as you can see below or if you’d like a glimpse of the dogs themselves then check out the menu online.

Now that we’ve covered the deal lets cover the food. With the aforementioned special available we opted for that which was ‘The Mac Attack’ when we visited; a dog topped with mac n cheese, pepperoni and jalapenos. We also ordered ‘The Texan Dog’ which was a dog topped with pulled pork, slaw, jalapenos and white southern BBQ sauce.

For the fries we both opted for chicken salt seasoning, something I’ve not had since my days in Australia and something I’ve never seen in Glasgow! There was also a pretty good choice of craft beers that I sadly couldn’t sample as I had the car but I did enjoy a nice refreshing Diet Coke that had free refills; so it wasn’t all bad.

First out was ‘The Texan’ and it didn’t disappoint! The only thing that might have been better would have been a bib as it was fully loaded as promised. The thing that sometimes puts me off hot dogs is the actual dog itself, if that makes sense? Some places worry too much about the toppings and then pair them with a substandard dog; this certainly wasn’t the case here!

The dog was delicious; the menu describes it as a “Bavarian smoked pork jumbo Frankfurter” and it certainly wasn’t wrong on the jumbo part, it was huge! There was no skimping on the toppings either, with a stack of 40 hour slow cooked pork piled on top along with a generous helping of slaw and fresh jalapenos (much better than pickled jar ones for sure). All of this was then smothered in white southern BBQ sauce. I really enjoyed this and would definitely have it again as it was just a good old fashioned loaded dog with plenty of taste and flavour!

Next up was ‘The Mac Attack’ which was delayed due to a mix up in the kitchen. The special was available in 2 options: with mac n cheese alone or with mac n cheese, pepperoni and jalapenos. We were brought out a dog with mac n cheese only but when we pointed this out the staff couldn’t have been nicer in sorting out the mix up.

They apologised profusely and made a fresh dog with all the toppings and brought it back out relatively quickly. In fact, throughout the visit the staff were excellent and everyone was very friendly; making sure we knew the drinks had free refills, re-filling said drinks when they did run low and just generally checking in on how we were enjoying the meal! I really couldn’t fault the staff at all.

As for ‘The Mac Attack’, it was worth the wait. There was only ever a small chance I wouldn’t enjoy this dish to be honest, when it comes to mac n cheese I’m pretty much down for it be added to anything. Again the fresh jalapenos were a nice touch and the pepperoni added to the flavour without overpowering the dog or mac. The fries were also very good and being able to have chicken salt with them brought back a nice bit of nostalgia and only added to enjoyment of both dishes.

I’m definitely recommending checking out Surf Dogs if you like some good old fashioned ‘dirty’ food! If all the food is as good as the ones we had then they’re on to a winner here! I can only imagine how good this would have been if I was hungover though I was giving a glimpse into this by the little lady who thoroughly enjoyed her meal despite feeling a little ‘tender’ shall we say!

This was a great little diner; great food, great staff and great atmosphere. A big plus for me in any place is the music that’s on while I’m eating and Surf Dogs were dropping hit after hit whilst I was in.

If you like hot dogs then do yourself a favour, give Surf Dogs a try!
