PARTICK DUCK CLUB

QUACKERS FOR BRUNCH!

With a 5am airport run on the agenda to pick up the little lady on Friday I decided it would be the perfect time to take advantage of Partick Duck Club’s fantastic 50% off breakfast deal they have on their website (details here). Having booked a table for 9am I was more than ready for a coffee when I arrived and started off with a latte while I looked over the menu.

Regular readers will know I favour perusing menus and planning my meals the week in advance and it’s not that I didn’t do this with Partick Duck Club; it was that I kept changing my mind as there was so many things I wanted to try. The shakshuka baked eggs dish and the duck leg and nduja hash are definitely on my hit-list for the next visit (check out the breakfast/brunch menu here).

In the end we opted for two main dishes; 24 hour beef short rib and duck egg benedict and Welsh rarebit on toast with mushroom and spinach. We also ordered a side of duck fat fries and a cinnamon bun which was delivered fresh to the door while we were eating breakfast! Now that’s what you call fresh!

As you might imagine, it was pretty quiet when we arrived so early on a Friday morning, but I was instantly impressed! The place was immaculate and welcoming and we managed to score a comfy booth as the place wasn’t over run with large groups… I could get used to Friday brunches if only I didn’t have to work!

I’m sure the guys at Partick Duck Club will be hoping this changes and I can’t see why it won’t! It’ll only be a matter of time until this is up there as one of Glasgow’s best brunch/breakfast stops. I’d recommend getting down soon and trying this place out, if you’re lucky it might be before the place is queued out the door every morning and the aforementioned discount is no longer available.

Now while I did struggle with deciding what to order I don’t think there was ever a doubt that the 24 hour beef short rib and duck egg benedict was going to be one of them. I love eggs benedict and I love short rib so there was no way I was leaving without trying this. I wasn’t disappointed either, to make this dish even better it was also topped with tobacco onions which are the Rolls Royce of onions in my opinion.

Everything about this dish was perfect, it’s a rare thing but I can’t think of anything on it I would have changed. The egg was poached perfectly as demonstrated by that yolk running over everything above. The short rib was also delicious and even the toast was done to perfection. I really can’t recommend this dish enough!

Next up was the little lady’s choice of Welsh rarebit. Now it’s a rare thing for me to order a dish with no meat in it; it’s even more rare for me to enjoy a dish with no meat in it but that’s precisely what happened here. I’ve always thought of Welsh rarebit as a fancy version of toasted cheese, which I love, but this was so much more. It was a million miles removed from the beloved snack I know and love.

I’m not sure what cheese was used here or what other ingredients where mixed into the melting pot but this was delicious. I wasn’t expecting the cheese to be so creamy and then I wasn’t sure I’d like it but I did! The mushrooms and spinach were lovely too, I think other than broccoli spinach is probably my favourite vegetable so it’s always a welcome addition on my plate. Again, I’d recommend this dish as one to try; especially for cheese lovers.

Last but certainly not least on the original order were the duck fat fries … yes, fries with breakfast is now acceptable! A few days before visiting I saw an Instagram post about the return of the duck fat fries topped with tobacco onions, aioli and chives, need I say more?

These were some of the most delicious fries I’ve tasted. Thick cut chips, smothered in duck fat and topped with lovely toppings that tasted as good as they look above. True to form, this dish surpassed my expectations and there’s also other variations of the fries; notably ones topped with duck club honey mustard mayo, crispy bacon & spring onion. I think it’s safe to say I’ve probably already decided on my next order at Partick Duck Club.

The eagle eyed above will have noticed the cinnamon bun hiding in the background as well. This was a tasty little treat and the Partick Duck Club gets these and other tasty morsels delivered fresh daily if you needed any other reason to go. These deliveries come from The Freedom Bakery; a social enterprise artisan bakery who train and develop the skills of a small team of people with convictions (check them out here).

I can honestly say this is one of the best brunches I’ve had in Glasgow and I’ll definitely be back. Not only to work through the brunch menu but also to try their lunch and dinner menu (have a look here) which includes some beautiful sounding dishes such as mac and cheese with grain mustard, caramelised onions and 24 hour beef short rib or duck leg, crispy sesame duck egg, duck fat chips with spiced pineapple chutney.

Do yourself a favour and get down here while you can still get a seat!
